We are quite fortunate to have a few wild blueberry bushes right in our yard. We look forward to July each year so we can stock up on this incredible health food.
Did you know that these tiny wild berries have more vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants than their traditional counterparts? They are also sweeter and more intense in flavor.
Here are Some Fun Wild Blueberry Facts:
- They have more antioxidants than regular blueberries (twice as much!)
- You can freeze without destroying their antioxidant potency
- They are very low on the glycemic index
- They are less likely to burst when baking than regular blueberries
- They are considered a super food
What Are Superfoods?
Super foods are natural food sources with highly concentrated, complex supplies of high quality nutrients with the least negative properties. They are not always low in calories, but for the number of calories present, they are always high in nutrients. They are an EXCELLENT addition to ANY healthy diet!
Super foods, of course, should NOT be the only part of your diet. Simply, they can enhance already healthy practices. Super foods can help nourish the brain, muscles, bones, organs, immune system, hair, skin and nails.
Top Superfoods (in no particular order)
- Aloe Vera
- Bee Products
- Camu Camu Berry
- Goji Berries
- Incan Berries
- Maca (adds a nice, nutty flavor to smoothies)
- Marine Phytoplankton
Do you use any of these regularly? I use cacao in baking and in smoothies as well as coconut oil in just about everything. Other favorites in our kitchen include blueberries, raw local honey and bee pollen, spirulina, and chlorella. How do you take your favorite super food?
