3 Reasons to Cook in Cast Iron

Cast iron cooking is back in fashion! If you do not have cast iron cookware in your kitchen, I highly recommend it. We currently have one cast iron skillet that must have prepped thousands of meals in its lifetime and is still going strong! With proper care, cast iron can last for generations.


Here are 3 reasons why you should consider adding cast iron to your cooking routine:


1.  Cooking With Minerals: Cooking in cast iron can actually provide you with the essential mineral of iron. Iron deficiency is not uncommon, especially among women. Iron is needed for proper maintenance of red blood cells throughout your entire body. Deficiency can result in lethargy, weakness, irritability, lack of focus and low body temperature. More serious cases can turn into anemia.

2.  Much Safer Than Non-Stick Alternatives: When your cast iron cookware is well-seasoned, it becomes non-stick itself. Instead of relying on non-stick cookware, which is loaded with dangerous carcinogenic chemicals such as PFOA, try cooking in cast iron instead. To season your pan, coat it in oil (olive oil preferred) after every use and let it penetrate. Then wipe clean. Also, never clean your cast iron with soap. Hot water and scrubbing is all it needs. Make sure to dry immediately and season.

3.  Versatility: This form of cookware can also go easily from the stove directly to the oven. If your recipe calls for frying first and baking second, you’ve got yourself covered with a cast iron skillet.

I’ve prepared a super simple breakfast in my cast iron pan that I’m happy to share with you!


Fall Skillet Hash


  • 4 links of all natural apple sausage (I like al Fresco brand)
  •  1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 organic apple (any variety), cut into 1/4″ cubes
  • 3-5 poached eggs



If your cast iron pan is well-seasoned you generally won’t need to add cooking oil. If not, add a tablespoon of grape seed oil or other low smoke oil. Heat on medium to low. Remove casings from sausages (add a thin knife length-wise and peel off casing.) Cut in the round into coin-sized pieces of the same size. Add to skillet. Add onion and apples to skillet and turn heat to medium stirring as needed.

Meanwhile put on a pot of water and bring to boil. Drop in 3-5 eggs for 3 minutes to poach. Remove with slotted spoon and place on top of skillet dish when your hash is thoroughly cooked, careful not to break the yolks. Spoon mixture onto plates and serve. This dish is fantastic served with a perfect poached egg atop your hash mixture. On your first bite cut into the poached egg to let the yolk run wild on top of the hash.
