One of the latest superfood crazes I’ve come across over the last year is matcha tea. Like the cosmopolitan martini of the 2,000s, matcha tea is trendy in all of the health food cafes.
But what exactly is matcha?
Matcha, essentially, is a powdered green tea. Because it is powdered and condensed, it is a strong variation of green tea. As a fine powder, you are actually drinking the leaves as opposed to steeping the tea in hot water. This makes it especially versatile to use in lattes, smoothies, and even in baking.
What Makes It Different?
According to mercola.com, “Matcha preperation includes covering green tea with shade cloths before they’re harvested which triggers the growth of leaves with better flavor and texture.” The leaves are dried and ground to a fine powder.
What Are the Health Benefits?
Many! Since it is a stronger form of green tea, it still contains all of the benefits of green tea multiplied.
- Rich in anti-oxidants
- High in chlorophyll, a natural body detoxifier
- Full of nutrients including L-Theanine, an amino acid
Enjoy these delicious, on-the-go protein bites which incorporates matcha powder right in the recipe! Where do you find matcha? I’ve included a link in the recipe below.
